Ouch! Bills!

February 7th, 2008 at 12:47 am

After the rent, utilities/water and cable, my other bills come out to around $400/month. I was thrilled the past two months when my cc bill was closer to $300, due in part to my "smarter" grocery shopping strategies (cook more, buy less prepackaged foods).

And then...it all goes down.

Got my biannual car insurance bill. Yes, it is a necessary evil. But it adds another $480 on top of my regular monthly expenses. Ouch.

Also, I know this month's elecricity bill is going to be astronomical. Probably close to $200, given the cold late January cold spell.

Looks like I won't be able to contribute much, if any, to savings this month. Boo.

You might look at making the insurance a "regular monthly bill", and put aside 1/12th of the annual bill, each month. Then, you will have the money when the bill comes.
The envelope system works well for this type of expense.

I agree with Nance. You might also want to set up envelopes for car maintenance, birthday gifts and christmas.

for all my bills i tally up the average cost and then add them all up for the year and divide them by 52. then i put this amount away every week for my bills. that way i always have the money for bills, no matter if it's just the internet bill ($25 a month) or the car insurance bill ($395 a year) (and which incidently always comes at the same time as my rego bill! ($277). it works for me anyway.
