Picking up spare change

February 2nd, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I'm a believer in, "find a penny, pick it up" regardless if it is heads up or down. However, I really don't often find change lying around! For kicks, I started a tally of the change I found on the ground. So far it's been a whopping 28 cents.

I have read stories of people who find an AMAZING amount of money in parking lots, public parks or camping grounds, store floors, etc. I guess those people are just very fortunate!

Yeah, sometimes finding money on the ground is a bit like morel hunting. I'm sure that there are better places to hunt than others - it would be interesting to figure out the likeliest places, even the likeliest cities.

Bus stops and public transit places are good, anywhere where there are people waiting, sticking their hands in their pockets and pulling them out again. I've also found change (pennies and dimes) in bank lobbies, sidewalks, cross walks. I found the dollar bill in a public park early in the morning, right on the beauty bark. I'm also thinking that bars, sidewalks in front of bars, anywhere where tipsy people not thrilled with picking up their money, is another good hunting ground.

Sister's partner, who was amazing at finding money, lives in Milwaukee, while I live in Seattle. I still think that Seattle's slimmer pickings - lots of plastic (debit/credit card) use.

I usually only find pennies and an occasional dime or quarter. But, the other day I found a dollar bill in the grocery!
